MUJI Reduces Prices Permanently at US Stores

Starting April 2, 2015 MUJI will permanently reduce the prices on over 650 products at its US stores. The reduction is not a sale nor promotional campaign but a reflection of MUJI’s constant effort to offer affordable prices and maintain accessibility to the widest audience possible.

MUJI commonly reduces prices in its Japan stores, but this is the first time such a widespread reduction has been carried out in the US. Although consumers often misunderstand MUJI’s reductions as a reflection of flagging sales or an imminent store closing, the reductions are part of MUJI’s core philosophy called “zutto yoi ne” (“always good prices”).

MUJI is able to offer lower prices because of its strict attention to streamlining manufacturing, cutting out unnecessary costs, and focusing on raw, undyed, organic materials. The reduction will bring prices closer to those in MUJI’s home market of Japan and thus provide the same low prices for American customers.

With around 2,000 different products in the average MUJI store, customers will find about 1 out of every 4 products lower in price. Some of MUJI’s iconic products that are now less expensive include:

Below, from top left: REUSED YARN SOCKS, set of 5 (reduced 11% from $17.95 to $16.00) // BRUSH FOR CLOTHING (26% from $24.25 to $18.00) // A5 NOTEBOOK (30% from $5.75 to $4.00) // PET PUMP BOTTLES in most colors and sizes (reduced variously 9-21%) // ORGANIC SOFT COTTON TOWELS face and bath towels (reduced 10-11%) // GLASS 200ML (42% from $3.50 to 2.00)
